Tool Description:

ROM-DOS* 6.22, a highly compatible DOS operating system, is designed for embedded and mobile computing environments based on the Intel architecture. ROM-DOS is compatible at the applications level and covers the entire Intel CPU spectrum from the Intel 80C186EC and the Intel386™ EX Processor to the Intel486™ SX, DX Processor, and beyond. A partial list of hardware applications for ROM-DOS includes single-board PCs, cellular phones, Personal Digital Assistants, industrial controllers, flight recorders, diagnostic instrumentation, health monitors, and hand held terminals.
A major advantage to selecting ROM-DOS as your target operating system is the shorter development and shorter "time-to-market" cycles realized by using standard desktop tools and debuggers. In addition, there is no need to worry about cramming an operating system, BIOS, drivers, and applications into ROM (and/or RAM) since the ROM-DOS kernel only uses 48K of memory. A developer could also choose a configurable, miniCOMMAND processor of only 4K to load on embedded systems. If the embedded system has limited keyboard and display requirements, than Datalight's MiniBIOS will work extremely well with embedded applications.
Plus, Datalight includes several utilities, such as Quick Build, which creates a ROM-DOS kernel in as little as 5 minutes; Remote Disk, which allows the engineer to exchange files (and more) between a target embedded or mobile system and a desktop unit, and RXE's, ROMable Exe programs that can run almost any executable file out of ROM for systems that have limited RAM. ROM-DOS has a very low cost royalty structure and a full ROM-DOS Software Developer's Kit includes a coupon for twenty free licenses. Often, Datalight has special Mini Software Developer's Kits, for specific processors like the Intel386™ EX Processor and the 80C186 EC, available to qualified Original Equipment Manufacturers free of charge.
